What is mead?
Mead is a beverage made from honey, water, and yeast, and is often referred to as “honey wine.” Its flavor can vary greatly—from fresh and light to rich and sweet—depending on the type of honey used and the method of production. Mead can be enjoyed on its own, but it can also be infused with herbs, spices, or fruit, creating endless unique variations.
The story of mead
Mead is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages in the world. Archaeological findings suggest that as early as 7000 BC, pottery from Neolithic China already contained chemical traces of fermented mixtures made with honey, rice, and fruits. Throughout history, mead also appears in ancient writings. Celtic and Anglo-Saxon texts (most famously the epic Beowulf ) describe it as the drink of kings and warriors, shared in grand feasting halls.
For centuries, mead played an important cultural and celebratory role, from ancient Asia to medieval Europe.
